Record Dollar Purchases in Argentina

Argentines purchased a record amount of dollars following the partial lifting of currency controls. In 2024, the net outflow of private sector foreign currency reached $32.34 billion, the highest since 2003.

In December alone, 1.5 million individuals bought $2.186 billion in banknotes, while 670,000 sold only $477 million. Key outflow channels included tourism, debt interest payments, and settlement of foreign liabilities.

A portion of acquired dollars remains in local accounts for foreign card transactions, mitigating total capital flight.
